Awakening The Kundalini
The Kundalini can never be awakened by force or by any determination or activity of the human ego or psyche. When it is ready is the right time and then the process is spontaneous, natural and without harmful side effects. Normally the Kundalini will choose to awaken, when feeling the presence of another awakened Kundalini. At that moment, a part of the Kundalini becomes active and more and more of the Kundalini can become active later on, provided that suitable circumstances prevail.
Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi awakened the Kundalini in thousands of people and she taught her followers how they could also awaken the Kundalini. It the past it was a difficult thing to achieve but now it is much easier. There can still be obstacles and the Kundalini might not rise in some people. So, you cannot guarantee to awaken another person's Kundalini.
"Now there is a method to tap the Divine power - Sahaja Yoga. At the very outset, I have to say that the working of Sahaja Yoga is very simple, although the operation within is quite complex. For example, if you want to watch television, it is very easy. But to explain the engineering technique of a television set is very difficult and the explanation is complicated. To learn about a television you also need a qualified engineer who understands it and who can explain its working.
I will try to explain Sahaja Yoga in the simplest way, but please note that it is really complicated if you want to know it in detail. The best way to enjoy television is first to switch it on and watch. Then later you can try to understand its engineering. As a Mother I would say that I have done the cooking for you. Why should you worry about how it is done? If you are hungry you should start eating. If you are not actually hungry, but only inquisitive, what can I do? I can neither force you to eat nor make you hungry with discussions or lecturing. I leave it to your wisdom and to your freedom to feel that longing."
Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi's Programmes
For around 30 years, Shri Mataji travelled extensively and spoke at public and private gatherings. Many sessions were recorded. Hundreds of audios and videos may be found online, so there is now extensive access to the knowledge which Shri Mataji gave to us.
The public meetings had one main purpose, which was to raise the Kundalinis of the audience. For the majority of people who were listening to Shri Mataji for the first time, even the existence of the Kundalini had been previously unknown. Others had heard about the Kundalini but they did not know much about it, how it behaved and what was its purpose. There were some books about Kundalini but the information given was not accurate and each one tended to present a different understanding.
In the 1930s, Carl Jung, the famous psychologist, gave lectures about the Kundalini and about the human body's subtle centres of consciousness, known as chakras. Unfortunately, Jung's information was largely speculative. He had studied the subject academically and theoretically but he did not speak from a reliable base of direct experience, combined with a proper understanding. Jung spoke about chakras from a psychological perspective, as if they were virtual structures underlying various aspects of our personality, which could become increasingly important during a process of individual evolution. So the chakras and their qualities, as described by Jung, were more like ideas and explanations about the continued development of human nature than about particular locations in the human body and the mechanisms for subtle energies to flow around the body.
Things are more concrete according to the teachings of Shri Mataji. The chakras are not mere symbols or abstract mental structures. However, the existence of the chakras is on a level more subtle than the physical body. If a body is opened up, as in a medical operation, you cannot photograph a chakra. You cannot photograph or measure energies flowing through a chakra. But a sufficiently enlightened person can feel the energies and can feel something of the condition of the chakras, their state of health or their stage of development. Many followers of Shri Mataji are able to feel these energies and they can feel the condition of the individual chakras. They are not just a few people but they are in thousands. They can even feel the condition of the chakras or the Kundalini of another person.
And also many cannot feel these things! We are all at different stages of development, we have different backgrounds, different histories and different skills. The condition of a person's throat chakra, the Vishuddhi Chakra, largely determines their sensitivity on the subtler levels.
Here, we need to stand back and examine my words. Isn't this like the story of the Emperor's new clothes? To suggest that these chakras are important things but that only a gifted person may perceive them... Yes, I agree, it does sound like that story. However, I am confident that the chakras are real and that they are a form of structured consciousness, which associates itself with the nerve plexuses in the body. To offer an analogy, in a modern computer there are wires and microchips and other physical items. The whole system is created with complex technology and the pieces which you can see or touch or remove are known as the hardware. However, for a computer to work, there also have to be software programs. These programs are sets of instructions, combined with definitions of the conditions under which they will be used. And there is data associated with the programs or incorporated into the programs, such as encoded numbers and text. Programs are generally created outside of the computer which will use them but they are loaded into the computer and they supervise the operation of the computer. In the body, we can consider that the nerve plexuses and other organic matter are the hardware. Information can travel from one part of the body to another, via our nerves or via messages in chemical form, and the behaviour of our organs can be supervised by the brain, etc. But in the same way as a computer requires software, the physical body needs the dedicated support of consciousness. It needs specific, complex and evolved manifestations of consciousness, one program or many to run the heart, one program or many to run the liver, one program or many to run the brain and at least one program for each opposable thumb!
Researchers need to discover more about how consciousness interacts with the physical body and, in particular, where consciousness can be located within the body. Shri Mataji has explained that the energy or consciousness which becomes the individual Kundalini enters the body while it is a foetus, between two and three months old. It enters at the fontanelle area, on top of the head, and passes through the brain and down the spinal chord. While it is moving, it creates several chakras and then it coils up and settles in the sacrum bone.
To be rational about this topic, you should accept the suggestion that the chakras exist and that the Kundalini exists. Later, after sufficient direct experience or experimentation you can decide whether or not the information is reliable. I believe Shri Mataji's analogy about cooking is helpful. "As a Mother I would say that I have done the cooking for you. Why should you worry about how it is done? If you are hungry you should start eating." So, please, taste the food.
Towards the end of most public programmes Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi would take people gently into a meditative state and encourage their Kundalinis to rise. After that she often met the new people and worked to repair damage to their chakras. Shri Mataji's followers also helped the new people, standing close to them and helping the Kundalini to rise or treating various chakra problems. Many of us still do it. We learnt the job! Now it is your turn...
